MAINSTREAM MESSENGER Vol. 1, No. 3 November 1998WHY BAPTISTS NEED FREE EDUCATION The geology professors of that day challenged us to think and question the existing theories of that time. Wise professors and administrators created a climate that encouraged the growth of knowledge and understanding. Freedom to challenge existing ideas should not be limited to secular institutions of higher learning. Prior to 1979 our Baptist seminaries were free to challenge our people to think for themselves. Tragically, that academic freedom has been replaced by forcing the staff at those seminaries to slip into a "creedalistic straightjacket" before being allowed to teach. Our seminaries are now indoctrinating students rather than educating them. There are leaders in our seminaries who still claim to believe in such basic distinctives as priesthood of the believer and the autonomy of the local church. Such opposing convictions simply wont wash. Creedalistic teaching and Baptist distinctives are mutually exclusive. My earnest hope is that the new administration at Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) will continue the legacy of Dr. Agee and his respect for academic freedom. It would be most unfortunate if this kind of "creedalistic straightjacket" were placed on the staff at OBU. |
