MAINSTREAM MESSENGER Vol. 1, No. 3 November 1998RESOLUTION AGAINST THE IMPOSITION OF THE SBC'S FAMILY AMENDMENT WHEREAS the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message statement is a unifying document that is broadly accepted by all Southern Baptists.WHEREAS the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message statement is a non-binding, non-creedal confession of faith. WHEREAS the 1998 family amendment to the Baptist Faith and Message divisively requires wives to submit to their husbands (Eph. 5:22) without giving due consideration to the biblical command to "submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." (Eph. 5:21) WHEREAS adherence to the 1998 family amendment is being forcefully imposed on the faculty at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in a binding, creedal fashion. WHEREAS many Oklahoma Baptist churches look to Southwestern seminary for trained ministers to serve in our churches. WHEREAS Oklahoma Baptists make significant financial contributions through the Cooperative Program to support and sustain the work of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. WHEREAS Oklahoma Baptists provide facilities and, at times, faculty at Oklahoma Baptist University that Southwestern Seminary uses to teach students. LET IT BE RESOLVED that Oklahoma Baptists respectfully request that the trustees and administration of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary reconsider and rescind their demand that all faculty members either sign the family amendment or resign. Editor's Note: This resolution was presented to the resolutions committee of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma on November 9, 1998 by Mainstream Executive Director Bruce Prescott. The Resolutions Committee failed to refer the resolution for a vote of the convention. Prescott then submitted the Resolution in the form of a Motion from the floor of the Convention during the afternoon business session on November 10, 1998. The motion was defeated. About 600 votes against and about 30 votes for the resolution. No attempt was made by the Mainstream organization to get a vote out to support this resolution. All but a handful of Mainstream members first learned that the resolution would be presented at the annual Mainstream luncheon that was held about three hours before the vote was taken. More than 80% of the Mainstream members who attended the luncheon had not asked their church to elect them as messengers to the BGCO convention. |
